The Day - Will another fire-service study be ignored in Norwich? - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published December 23. 2020 4:53PM  On Aug. 17, 2020, The Day ran a story titled, “Norwich City Council approves fire services study.” That study has cost the taxpayers $81,150, and is scheduled to be done by Dec. 31. This is not the first time that the taxpayers have paid for such a study. Many of the recommendations of the prior study were totally ignored by some of our city leaders, as well as individual departments, within this city of 40,000. On July 2, 2016, The Day also ran an article titled, Norwich s fire service more fractured than ever, officials say. That article discussed how the city is divided and − although a paid-on duty staff might be much closer and able to respond quicker − some department leaders take objection to doing that and rather call a volunteer department much farther away. Such an approach puts both our citizens, as well as firefighters on the scene, in more danger than necessary. Plus, it raises the possibility of more property damage.
