Alabama Democratic Party Executive Director Wade Perry on Monday called for the firings of Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray and Officer William Darby after Darby was placed on paid administrative leave following his conviction on murder charges.
“He’s a convicted murderer. He shouldn’t get another day’s pay. Fire him. And the police chief,” Perry said in an email.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – An Alabamapolice officer convicted of murder for shooting a suicidal man who was holding a gun to his own head has been taken off duty but will continue to be paid, the city of Huntsville said.
Officer William Darby, who was initially placed on desk duty following the killing of Jeffrey Parker in 2018, can t continue working as an officer because of the conviction and went on leave Monday, city spokeswoman Lucy DeButy told news outlets. This is the normal process until formal proceedings under the City of Huntsville’s personnel policies and procedures are complete, she said in a statement. Darby was freed on $100,000 bond soon after the verdict on Friday.

A Huntsville police officer convicted of murder last week has been placed on paid administrative leave.
William Ben Darby was convicted of murder on Friday for shooting and killing Jeff Parker, a suicidal man, in April 2018. A Madison County jury found Darby guilty after about two hours of deliberations. He was released on a $100,000 bond just over two hours later.

The city of Huntsville has issued a notice of a request for a formal disciplinary hearing for Huntsville Police Officer William Darby, according to a spokesperson.
Darby will be served with the notice, the spokesperson said.
He was convicted of murder on Friday for the shooting death of Jeffrey Parker. The conviction is a cause for disciplinary action, according to the city s personnel manual.
At this time, it s unclear when that disciplinary hearing will take place, but for now Darby is on paid admnistrative leave.
