JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) - Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter died Friday, He was 97.
Winter, who served as governor from 1980-84, was known as the “Education Governor” for his staunch support of education reform in the state. In 1982, legislation passed bringing kindergarten and compulsory school attendance to Mississippi for the first time.
Notice of his death first appeared in “Mississippi Today.”
Over a 75-year career in public service, Winter held a variety of positions, including state representative; state tax collector; state treasurer; lieutenant governor; and governor.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter, a Democrat who pushed to strengthen public education and improve race relations, has died.
He was 97.
Family spokesman Dick Molpus says Saturday that Winter died Friday night at home in Jackson.
Molpus is a former Mississippi secretary of state who had worked on Winter’s gubernatorial staff.
Police investigate shootings in Portland, Gresham

Police in Portland and Gresham are investigating three shootings Monday, Dec. 14, that killed one person and left two others wounded.
TNo one was arrested and no suspect information was available in any of the shootings, either.
According to Portland police, the first investigation began around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 when officers responded to the area of Southeast 136th Avenue and Division Street. A victim was located and rushed to a hospital by ambulance.
The victim was later declared dead. He was identified as Abdushukri Uren, 16.
