When Draining the Swamp had nothing to do with Washington D C

By Bob Wessel A trip from Petersburg to Blissfield is measured in minutes today. This was not the case when George Giles made the trip in 1826.  Giles was obliged to cut a 13-mile-long road through the wilderness and wetlands along the River Raisin to reach his new home in Blissfield.  Anyone looking across the lower eastern part of Lenawee County over the land between the River Raisin and the Ohio state line would never know that this flat picturesque area did not start out as the rich and productive farmland we see today. This land was once an untamed swamp, home to a wide range of wildlife and providing a fertile hunting ground for native Americans and newly arriving white settlers.

The story of Little Mill Reform School, which closed in 1922

SECRETS of Monmouthshire’s Reformatory School are revealed in this story of a bold strategy to divert boys from a life of crime. In 1910 at Monmouthshire’s first Reformatory School, established in 1859 at Little Mill, one of the juvenile offenders found himself at the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons. Teenager Robert Wood was among boys located from the Midlands following an expansion of the school’s catchment area. When the School was opened in February 1859 to cope with an increase in juvenile crime in Victorian Britain it was seen to be ideally placed between the prison at Usk, Pontypool and other valley towns.
