Walter H. Clausson
Walter Howard Clausson, aka Pop, Walt, Pop Pop, and/or Uncle Howard, was born January 5, 1930 in Beaver Falls, PA, the 9th child of William Allen and Ethel Mae Moon Clausson. The son of a farmer and mechanic, with eight other siblings Walt’s childhood was very humble. He remembered wearing burlap potato sacks for clothing and kicking the snow off the bottom of the bed, that came through the slats of the wall on cold wintry nights on the Pennsylvania farm where they lived. Despite their meager lifestyle, there was lots of love and Pop said he never knew they were poor.
Now & Then: Catanach’s Jewellers Posted April 15, 2021
Jeweller takes a closer look at the history of Catanach’s Jewellers with Amanda Catanach, managing director, as it turns 147 this year.
FOUNDED BY George William Catanach
ESTABLISHED 1874
George William Catanach migrated from London, UK to Australia in 1870 aboard the ship Swiftsure, aged 24.
A trained diamond setter, he filled a need for skilled workers to manufacture the many items of jewellery starting to be produced in Melbourne due to the Gold Rush.
As the only diamond setter in the colony, his skills were in demand and he worked for several Melbourne jewellers until 1874, when he opened GW Catanach Manufacturing Jeweller on Elizabeth Street in the CBD.

Will Tusk be the next Capalino?
Andrew Yang’s two campaign managers, his press secretary, his policy director and multiple senior advisers don’t actually work for his New York City mayoral campaign. They’re employed by Tusk Strategies, a lobbying firm that’s regularly hired by clients to advocate for or against bills that are being considered by the City Council and the mayor. And the arrangement raises concerns about what kind of access this lobbying firm – and the private clients that hire Tusk – would have to the mayor if Yang were to win the election.
“We believe that it is improper for the same firm to be both a campaign consultant, and then lobby the person that they helped to elect,” said Susan Lerner, executive director of good-government group Common Cause New York. Consultants build “a special relationship of trust” with the candidate, and Lerner added they’re increasingly cashing in on that relationship.
