A proposal headed for the Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Board would put a shopping center in east Macon, but not everyone who lives in a nearby historic neighborhood is not happy about it.
If the construction gets approved, crews would demolish or relocate two homes in the Fort Hawkins neighborhood. One neighbor said he doesn’t mind the progress of a shopping center; another says she’s not a fan.
Willie James has lived in the Fort Hawkins neighborhood for 43 years.

Pittsburgh Courier photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris was swindled out of his life’s work by a street vendor, who convinced Harris to sell his 100,000 photos and negatives for only $3,000. At the time, Harris was nearly 80 years old and didn’t have a lot of money. Even though Harris’ work is legendary now, in Pittsburgh circles and beyond, it didn’t really start to receive widespread recognition especially outside of Black media until very late in Harris’ life. Several years later, Harris and his family sued the street vendor and claimed the Harris estate was entitled to one-third of all profits from sales and exhibition of his work. In 2001, a few years after Harris passed away in 1998, the estate won that suit, and the collection was back in control of the Harris family.

On Jan. 13, 1997, President Bill Clinton had the honor of presenting seven Medals of Honor, six posthumously, to African American heroes of World War II.
During World War II, 433 men were awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration for valor in combat. None of them were African American.
In 1993, the US Army commissioned an investigation into racial discrimination in the awarding of medals. It was recommended that ten black World War II veterans be awarded the Medal of Honor. Seven of them were approved, including one for Private First Class Willy James Jr. who was born in Kansas City.
