The crossing at the junction to New Road and James Fintan Lalor Avenue is dangerous, says Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. “Anyone who doesn’t know the area, when you are driving from the church to the Kyle centre, you are completely blind. If someone is on the pedestrian crossing it is very dangerous,” she said. She tabled a motion to the April meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District to make it safer. “It is just too near the avenue,” agreed Cllr Noel Tuohy, supporting the motion.

Cllr Willie Aird tabled a motion to the Portlaoise Municipal District April meeting with his request to repair the road as far as the historic Clondarrig graveyard. There is a graveyard there which has mass once a year. It’s not closed yet. It would be nice to keep the road good up to that,” he said. He also asked that the roads be fully resurfaced next year. Clondarrig is a rural area north of the town, between Pallas and Ballyfin.

The practice of driving right through the cemetery to visit graves of loved ones in common in St Peter & Paul s cemetery, they say. Tyre marks can be seen on graves in the new lawn section of the cemetery, which is causing huge upset, says Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley. The whole way down the row there are tyre marks on graves. Family members are very upset, this needs to be addressed. A removable bollard each end would prevent this, she said.

Attempted delay to sell council land to a growing Laois business Reporter: );   ); A piece of council land in Laois is to be sold to an expanding local company, despite an attempted delay by a councillor who is concerned that the price is too low. The serviced 3 hectare (7.5 acres) site is in Junction 17 National Enterprise Park, and is to be bought by Midland Steel Reinforcement Supplies Ltd, a Mountmellick company. The land sale was proposed by Cllr Paddy Bracken from Mountmellick, seconded by Cllr Ollie Clooney. Cllr Bracken said he had been assured by the company’s manager Tony Woods that the existing jobs in Mountmellick will not be lost.
