Pietà is in a pitiful state, but it s not too late - Joanna Spiteri Staines

Pietà is one of the historical peripheral towns of Valletta dating back to circa 1800. It boasts a rich heritage of unique scheduled buildings, with a few having beautiful baroque and neoclassical gardens. The Grade 1 scheduled property Villa Frere is perhaps the most well-known, as a result of the incredible work of Perit Edward Said and the team at Friends of Villa Frere. In addition, the locality also includes the beautiful but incredibly dilapidated Palazzo Windward and Villa Gwardamangia, the former residence of Queen Elizabeth II post WWII and recently bought by Heritage Malta. Furthermore, it includes St Luke’s Hospital, a fine building in its own right, a legacy of the best of the ‘40’s architecture in Malta.

Scrap massive flyover plans for Msida creek, NGOs tell government A coalition of 10 green groups and several academics propose an alternative that prioritises public transport and open space instead of planned massive flyovers for Msida’s main square 7 January 2021, 12:14pm by James Debono The Msida Creek project proposed by Infrastructure Malta will see the construction of two massive flyovers to remove the traffic lights junction. A coalition of NGOs wants the plans scrapped to prioritise open space and pedestrians instead. Several groups want plans to build two flyovers across Msida’s main square to be scrapped, proposing instead a public transport interchange with a bigger public open space.

NGOs call for a rethink of the Msida flyovers project

The Msida Creek flyovers project presents an opportunity for a forward-looking infrastructural solution which facilitates sustainable transport, a group of environment NGOs said on Thursday. A call for tenders for the project was issued by Infrastructure Malta in September.  The project will end traffic lights congestion, extend the existing public garden and create a new stormwater system to alleviate the age-old Msida valley flooding problems. It will include the construction of two pedestrian bridges to replace existing pelican crossings, 100 new parking spots and upgrades to other roads in the area, such as that between Ta’ Xbiex and Triq Marina and from Valley Road to and from the skatepark roundabout. An open area close to the Workers Memorial will be embellished.
