Two weeks before he was assassinated in 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. called organizer and activist Walter Palmer to discuss some concerns Black youth in Philadelphia had about King’s commitment to the anti-war movement. The youth asked Palmer to speak with King and let him know of their grievances.
After growing up in Centre County with two parents employed at Penn State, Alvin de Levie graduated from the university in 1973. He went on to earn a degree from Villanova Law School in 1976 and still practices as an attorney today in State College.
With a deep-rooted connection to Penn State and the surrounding community, de Levie feels he is the perfect candidate for one of the three available alumni-elected positions on Penn State’s Board of Trustees. He sat down with Onward State to discuss his platform and the upcoming election.
He pointed toward his upbringing, which heavily featured Penn State and the borough, as an influence on his life.

Norman J. Shachoy of Mattapoisett died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Feb. 7, 2021. His life was filled with his great loves his wife and family, his work, and the sea. Norm and Maryellen (Sullivan) met as teenagers in Mattapoisett and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They lived in and around Boston for most of their lives except when Norm’s work took them to London in the 70s. They spent all their summers on Buzzards Bay, in Mattapoisett and Marion, where they moved when Norm retired.
Norman attended Monsignor James Coyle High School in Taunton, and studied engineering at Villanova University. After completing his undergraduate degree, Villanova Law School offered him a full scholarship which changed the course of his life. After law school, Norm joined Bingham Dana & Gould in Boston where he practiced for 40 years. He advised many businesses, large and small, and represented major financial institutions, locally and int
