Many people added furry friends to their families over the past year during the pandemic. Now that restrictions are lifting and people are going back to work, is there a surge in surrenders?

Loudoun County Animal Services and Prince George’s County Animal Services reported they did not see an increase in people bringing back pets. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington said they’ve seen a drop in surrenders over the last few months. From March 2020 to March of this year, the Humane Rescue Alliance of Washington had a 24% drop in surrenders, and Montgomery County Animal Services had a 28% drop.

ALEXANDRIA, VA The Del Ray neighborhood will express its love for furry friends with a Dog Days in Del Ray theme for First Thursday in May.
First Thursday, a monthly festival, is held on the First Thursday of every month from April to September. The next event is scheduled for Thursday, May 6 from 6 p.m. to dusk along Mount Vernon Avenue. First Thursday is free and open to all.
Residents are invited to mask up and bring their dog for canine-themed activities and witness the ribbon cutting for the Dogs of Del Ray mural on the Stomping Ground building (2309 Mount Vernon Avenue).

Now the nonprofit is taking that a step further by partnering with the Animal Welfare League to deliver pet food to recipient’s four-legged friends.
