Putnam man dies in weekend kayaking incident elisfkc2 / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0     POMFRET, Connecticut (WFSB) A Putnam man died during an incident out on the Quinebaug River over the weekend. DEEP spokesperson Will Healy says crews initially responded to the Pomfret area of the river after receiving a report that a kayak was found submerged and there weren’t any occupants on board. Authorities later located the sole occupant, identified as 58-year-old Michael Lowell of Putnam, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Healy said that Lowell was not wearing a lifejacket. In accordance with state law, up until May 30, all occupants on board any paddle craft must wear a lifejacket.

A missing kayaker pronounced dead Sunday after being pulled from the Quinebaug River has been identified as a Putnam man. State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials said Michael Lowell, 58, was the occupant of a submerged kayak found in a Pomfret section of the river. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and was not wearing a life jacket, DEEP officials said. Agency spokesman Will Healey said his department is continuing to advise anyone heading onto the water to wear a life jacket and such precautions are mandatory for anyone operating a paddlecraft through May 30.
