New York seemed to be linked mostly to pitching in the leadup to the first round, but a number of interesting arms, such as Will Bednar and Gunnar Hoglund, were selected just ahead of them. Instead, the Yankees took a bat with their top pick for the fourth consecutive year. Sweeney is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound lefty swinger with a fair bit of upside. He’s risen up boards this year, running a 1.234 OPS with 14 homers in 48 games this collegiate season. Few scouts had the 21-year-old going as a first rounder entering the year, but Sweeney did more than enough in 2021 to convince the Yankees to pop him at 20th overall.
