With their first selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Yankees took Eastern Illinois shortstop Trey Sweeney. New York seemed to be linked mostly to pitching in the leadup to the first round, but a number of interesting arms, such as Will Bednar and Gunnar Hoglund, were selected just ahead of them. Instead, the Yankees took a bat with their top pick for the fourth consecutive year.
Sweeney is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound lefty swinger with a fair bit of upside. He’s risen up boards this year, running a 1.234 OPS with 14 homers in 48 games this collegiate season. Few scouts had the 21-year-old going as a first rounder entering the year, but Sweeney did more than enough in 2021 to convince the Yankees to pop him at 20th overall.
