Police, firefighters Light Up Huntington

WATERLOO — There is no escaping the fact these are dark times at Huntington Living Center, which is in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak that has led to more than 100 positive cases among residents and staff, including 16 resident deaths. For one night, through, the mood — and the environment — was quite a bit brighter. In an effort led by the Waterloo Police Department, multiple Seneca County law enforcement agencies and fire departments took part in a “Light Up Huntington” procession Thursday night — with emergency lights flashing — at the East Main Street facility. The effort was aimed at supporting Huntington staff and paying tribute to residents who have died and those battling the virus.

Doctors embrace chance to get vaccine

NEWARK — As the chairman of medicine for Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, Dr. Gregory Heeb is fairly high up on the hospital’s proverbial ladder. So when he was given a chance to be the first Newark-Wayne employee to get a COVID-19 vaccine, he embraced the opportunity. “I’ve been here a long time, and even though I’m chair of the department I do a lot of clinical work in the intensive care unit and COVID area. That’s why I think I was number one,” Heeb said Tuesday, about an hour after getting the Pfizer vaccine. “Part of this job is leadership, and that means leading the way. I was happy to do it.”

Huntington COVID outbreak leads to four deaths

WATERLOO — After going more than eight months without a resident testing positive for COVID-19, Huntington Living Center is in the midst of an outbreak that has seen 72 residents infected, including four deaths. “We are heartbroken that after eight and a half months of working so hard to ensure our facilities were not impacted, as so many facilities have been, the increase in community positivity rates has now translated into increased cases in long-term care,” said Lara Turbide, vice president of community services for Finger Lakes Health, which includes Huntington. “We are deeply saddened about the loss of beloved residents.” The first positive case for a resident was Nov. 4, about a week after an asymptomatic staff member tested positive. Turbide added that staff in all FL Health long-term care facilities are tested twice weekly, although the state Department of Health only requires one weekly test.
