In observance of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science globally celebrated on February 11, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that “advancing gender equality in science and technology is essential for building a better future.” The UN Secretary-General’s view is one shared by CNS, whose latest event, a course for nearly 80 female professionals from 23 countries across Africa, aimed to advance women in STEM through WMD nonproliferation training.

The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) held a high-level virtual event in cooperation with the CTBT Art. XIV Process Co-Chairs Algeria and Germany as well as the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the CTBTO.
The event included two panel discussions and highlighted the importance of the CTBT to national and international security as well as the non-proliferation regime and linkages between the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the CTBT. Panelists discussed the benefits states gain from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization’s (CTBTO) current activities in establishing and provisionally operating the Treaty’s verification regime, specifically highlighting related capacity building.
