Women dragon dancers scale up ambitions in VN

By day, Le Yen Quyen works as a pharmacist at her local health clinic in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. At night, she dances under the head of a lion on perilously high metal poles, practising her moves ahead of Lunar New Year festivities.
Quyen, 27, was one of the first women to join the Tu Anh Duong lion and dragon dance troupe, where performers mimic the movements of the creatures to bring good luck and dispel evil spirits.

Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday announced to cancel its firework display performance to celebrate Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, which falls on February 12 this year) to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Earlier, the municipal People’s Committee planned to organized pyrotechnic displays on Lunar New Year’s Eve at eight locations in districts 2, 11, 9, Binh Thanh, Cu Chi, Can Gio, Nha Be and Binh Chanh.
The local government has also assigned the Department of Information and Communications to work with local media to inform the cancelation to people in the city.

A spring flower festival gathering ornamental plants from around 500 nurseries in Mekong Delta provinces on Saturday kicked off at Binh Dong Wharf along the Tau Hu Canal in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 8.
The event features a wide range of ornamental plants, including many types of flowers favored by Vietnamese people for Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, which begins on February 12 this year) such as apricot blossoms, marigolds, bougainvillea and more.

Vietnam launched preparations for the Lunar New Year with a fish release on Thursday. The tradition involves releasing fish called carp into rivers and lakes in the country a week before the the holiday known as Tet officially begins.
The tradition comes from an ancient story of three “Kitchen Gods.” The three, two males and a female, take a ride on the brightly colored carp at the end of the year. They go to Heaven to meet with the Jade Emperor, the God who rules there. The Kitchen Gods report news about the families they represent to seek the emperor’s care and protection.
