James Van Gerwen, executive vice-president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1505, said on Friday the 61-year-old male driver, who has worked for Winnipeg Transit for about 15 years, is being treated in hospital for both his injuries from the collision and for an undisclosed medical emergency.

Multiple people, including a child, are recovering after a rush-hour collision Thursday afternoon left a Winnipeg Transit bus crashed into the front of a home.
One person was taken to hospital in unstable condition, while seven others were in stable condition. The crash occurred around 5 p.m. in the area of Henderson Highway and Kimberly Avenue.
The president of ATU Local 1505, Romeo Ignacio, has told multiple media outlets that it s believed the driver of the bus suffered a medical event while driving which may have led to the crash. Ignacio says video footage still needs to be viewed however to determine the cause.

However, the move would require Winnipeg council approval, and Mayor Brian Bowman is not on board.
In September, city council did support a provincial request to transfer $321 million of future Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program funds from a public transit stream to a green infrastructure category. That change was meant to accommodate the federal share for the first two phases of a $1.8-billion north end sewage treatment plant upgrade.
