Municipal parks currently close at 11 p.m.
Watson and other councillors have asked staff to review an earlier closing time to limit gatherings after dark, according to the mayor’s press secretary, Patrick Champagne.
City staff don’t need council’s permission to tweak operating hours for parks. Still, a council meeting on Wednesday could provide an opportunity for council members to explore the idea further with parks and bylaw managers.
There’s already some skepticism, notably from councillors Catherine McKenney and Mathieu Fleury, who both posted comments on social media about the possible 8 p.m. closing time for parks. McKenney said they’re worried about homeless people and those without private spaces, while Fleury said he’s also concerned an early closing time would disproportionally impact residents who live in apartments and other smaller accommodations.
