Censor : Film Review | Sundance 2021 | Hollywood Reporter

A nice little nasty. TWITTER 1/28/2021 Niamh Algar stars as a film censor in 1980s Britain who gets a little too dedicated to her job in director Prano Bailey-Bond s debut feature. Steeped in the gory look, grimy feel and transgressive spirit of the so-called video nasties from the 1980s, British meta-minded horror movie Censor offers an admirable pastiche, spiked with black humor. A debut feature for director Prano Bailey-Bond, whose well-traveled short Nasty covered similar territory, Censor stars upcoming actor Niamh Algar ( Calm with Horses) as a film censor who notices eerie parallels between a horror movie she s assessing for work and a tragedy from her own past.

Sugar Rush / Channel 4 Set against the nostalgic backdrop of noughties Brighton, 2005’s Sugar Rush provided a much-needed dose of women-loving-women representation on the small screen. Based on the novel of the same name by Julie Burchill, the sitcom followed typical teenager Kim who, alongside the slew of inevitable adolescent pressures, began to realise she might be gay. Having recently moved to Brighton from London, Kim struck up a friendship with Maria ‘Sugar’ Sweet, who she rapidly began to fall for. A heady maelstrom of first love and teenage dreams, Sugar Rush was as sweet as it was sad, and as moving as it was monumental.

James Dreyfus insists straight actors CAN play totally convincing gay characters

A prominent gay British actor has rejected calls from acclaimed screenwriter Russell T Davies for gay performers to be prioritised for LGBT roles. James Dreyfus, who played pioneering gay roles in Nineties sitcoms The Thin Blue Line and Gimme Gimme Gimme, said an actor s sexuality has nothing to do with their ability to convince and amaze . And the 52-year-old believes audiences would be deprived of the superlative recent performances put on by straight stars if roles were only based on sexual orientation. His comments come after Davies - best known for his work on Queer As Folk and Doctor Who - said gay actors should get LGBT roles and compared a straight actor playing a gay character to black face.
