Pomelo selects Mastercard to boost SME offering 06 May 2021
Source: Pomelo Pay Digital payments platform Pomelo Pay has partnered with Mastercard, enabling the London-based and globally focused company to build on the support it offers its business customers across the world with an expanded range of products and services. As a Principal Issuing Member, Pomelo will be able to issue payment cards directly to its small and medium-size enterprise (SME) customer base and make direct payment settlements with Mastercard on behalf of its merchants, helping its customers to further reduce the friction in the payments journey and help its merchants get access to their working capital faster.

The move is intended to help companies come back stronger in 2021 as restrictions loosen, while still offering a selection of new products that facilitate Covid-safe payments.
Pomelo Pay has provided a Payments-as-a-Service (PaaS) platform for BML since October 2019, allowing the bank to efficiently offer its business customers innovative payments solutions. Earlier today,
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak presented the budget for 2021. Obviously, the government policy on spending comes at a difficult time as COVID-19 is still very much with us yet glimmers of relief are showing as the vaccine takes hold. The Chancellor noted that:
“Since March, over 700,000 people have lost their jobs. Our economy has shrunk by 10% – the largest fall in over 300 years. Our borrowing is the highest it has been outside of wartime.”
All in all, rather gloomy but the Chancellor assured us that the UK will recover while reiterating his ongoing commitment to protecting jobs and supporting the populace. Expectations are for the economy to return to pre-pandemic levels by mid-2022, six months earlier than previously anticipated.
Small shops are facing more competition online. Combined with the impact of Brexit, this has made it even more important for businesses to sell overseas.
