Tommie Gorman, Northern Editor for RTÉ News, is to retire in April after 41 years, RTÉ have announced.
The State broadcaster announced that Vincent Kearney, currently northern correspondent for RTÉ, will step into the role upon Mr Gorman’s retirement.
Jon Williams, RTÉ’s managing director, described Mr Gorman as “the beating heart” of RTÉ News for 41 years, in a statement this morning, and described the news as bittersweet on Twitter.
“For 41 years, from Brussels to Belfast, via Sligo and Saipan, Tommie Gorman has been the beating heart of RTÉ News. He has earned the trust of audiences, north and south - and of all sides in Northern Ireland, telling their story, sharing his insights, and championing RTÉ’s role as an all-island news organisation,” Mr Williams said.

RTÉ News has announced the appointment of Vincent Kearney as Northern Editor.
He joined RTÉ in January 2019 when he was appointed Northern Correspondent.
In a statement, Managing Director of RTÉ News and Current Affairs Jon Williams said: Few know and understand Northern Ireland better than Vincent Kearney. A gifted storyteller, three decades of reporting Northern Ireland have given Vincent insights and authority in a place where trust and credibility matter more than most. From the aftermath of Brexit, to the continuing Covid crisis, RTÉ has a unique role as an all-island broadcaster. No-one is better placed to continue the work of Tommie Gorman, and David Davin Power and Jim Dougal before him, than Vincent Kearney.

Tommie Gorman who will retire in the Spring
FORMER BBC NI journalist Vincent Kearney is to replace Tommie Gorman as Northern Editor of RTÉ News.
The award-winning journalist will take up his new role in the spring when Mr Gorman retires.
With 32 years experience in journalism, Mr Kearney has previously worked as Home Affairs Correspondent for BBC Northern Ireland as well as The Sunday Times and Belfast Telegraph.
Looking forward to his new challenge Mr Kearney, who is from west Belfast but lives in Lurgan, Co Armagh with his family, said: I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to take on a role that is without doubt one of the best jobs in journalism on the island of Ireland.
