While the Minnesota Vikings didn t quite make it to Super Bowl LV this season, the state itself and the University of Minnesota was well represented with two rookie players on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one of them had a giant impact on the game!
Both WR Tyler Johnson and S Antoine Winfield Jr were former golden gophers and rookies this season with the Buccaneers who won the Super Bowl last night. Johnson is stuck on a depth chart behind a bunch of great receiving options including Evans, Godwin, Brown and Gronk, but Winfield Jr. was a starter all season and shone brightly last night in the Super Bowl.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV 31-9 over the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday night. Star Tribune Sports Columnist Jim Souhan joined me on WJON today. He says former Gopher safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and the Bucs defense outplayed the Chiefs injury riddled offense line.
I guess Tom was that missing piece, Adams said. Just needed that missing piece to go all the way.
Whitehead left the NFC Championship Game victory against the Green Bay Packers after forcing two fumbles. The Bucs other starting safety, Antoine Winfield Jr., missed that game with an ankle injury. Both have been limited at practice this week.
With Mike Edwards starting in Winfield s place, Adams filled in admirably when Whitehead was injured in Green Bay. Even if Whitehead puts a harness on his injured shoulder and suits up for the Super Bowl as expected, it s possible he won t last four quarters.
