(KWNO)- The Winona County Sheriffâs Office is warning residents to be on the lookout for the grandparent scam. Â
Authorities say the scammers will target elderly people over the phone by claiming to be their grandchild. The scammer will then say they are in a hospital or legal trouble and need money.  Â
Authorities say the caller will not likely know the name of the grandchild they are impersonating. Instead, they will try to get their target to name the grandchild. Â
Other reported scams in Winona County include callers impersonating the IRS saying there is a tax issue, callers impersonating the authorities claiming their target has an outstanding arrest warrant. Officials say those callers will ask their target to pay them to resolve the issue. Â
