Timely highlights of wine writing make a literary buffet on which to feast
Brian St. Pierre reviews
(Académie du Vin Library; £25)
By now, in this plague year, most of us may be feeling more than a bit like the poor dupe in Edgar Allen Poe’s “A Cask of Amontillado,” walled into a wine-cellar’s alcove, maneuvered into claustrophobic isolation in an extreme of anti-social distancing, and frustrated at being unable to expansively share one of the best things ever created for expansive sharing. Denied wine’s bridge to gregariousness, “cabined, cribbed, confined, bound in to saucy doubts and fears,” as Macbeth once complained, we need an antidote, and rummaging around in this anthology of wine writing is a good one; it’s a set of keys to open the windows and let some sun shine in again.
In Vino Veritas: Virtual Wine Tasting, COVID-19 & the Restaurant Business
Event Date - March 10
Join us for a new series of virtual discussions (In Vino Veritas) that will combine wine discoveries with the real stories of alumni and the impact of COVID-19 on their various industries.
First up is Mark Brownell (’02) co-founder of Eat Me Restaurants with locations in Lausanne and Geneva. Mark will share his story about the effect the COVID pandemic has had on his restaurants as well as his perspective on the industry across Switzerland. Mark will be interviewed by fellow alum Steve Smith (’96).
During this informal discussion, Mark will conduct a wine tasting so you can discover some great wines while hearing his story. Mark has selected 3 exceptional Italian wines from small estates that he loves in Puglia, Tuscany, and Marche. He has worked with his partners at Alfavin.ch to create a special package for this exclusive UCLA Anderson event, featuring three full bottles of wine
