The awards will support at least 22 UVM faculty and students from 5 colleges/schools and 8 departments. Over 40 local, national, and international collaborators from at least 8 partner institutions will participate, including the University of California-Davis, the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), the Winooski School District, Bioversity International, and Bahir Dar University.
Catalyst Awards are the Gund Institute’s flagship seed grant competition, and have provided over $800,000 in startup funds, supporting over 100 UVM scholars and 20 innovative projects, since launching four years ago. In three years, the program has generated over $8M in external funding, a 12-to-1 return on investment.
U.S. Rep. Peter Welch heard from Vermontâs school superintendents yesterday. About two dozen school officials joined the stateâs sole congressman for a half-hour conversation on Zoom that focused mainly on the coronavirus pandemic.
âI just want to start by saying thank you to you for dealing with something that is so unique â once in 100 years. Literally, thereâs just no playbook for what you had to do,â Welch said, acknowledging the extraordinary challenges educators have faced this year.
Recalling a recent visit to schools in Winooski, Welch said he saw âthe incredible logistics that had to be arranged in order to safely open schools.â

Vermont Business Magazine USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand today highlighted the department’s investments in 2020 that are building prosperity and strengthening the nation’s rural businesses and communities.
“Under the leadership of President Donald J Trump and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, USDA invested a record $40 billion in rural communities in 2020,” Brand said. “This assistance is helping increase economic opportunities and improving the quality of life for rural residents across the 50 states and all U.S. territories.”
