By taking that advice and giving things a shot, Aiden ended up serving on the school’s social-cultural committee, was elected as school captain, participated in school forums and represented Proserpine High at public speaking events.
The list does not stop there, he also organised the school chess club and contributed to the school magazine and newsletter.
He was accepted to participate in the UQ Young Scholars program and is a talented piano player who has donated his time to playing for St Paul’s Anglican Church and at Pinnacle Playhouse events. Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox, Proserpine State High School principal Don McDermott, school captain Imogen Tulk, Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert, school captain Aiden Payet and then Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan.

Division 1 councillor Jan Clifford agreed, saying homelessness and partial homelessness was a great issue in our region . Particularly for older people and particularly for older women, she said. For older women homelessness is the fastest growing demographic in Australia. Through no fault of their own, it may have been through a marriage break-up or there was one case that came across my desk was a lady whose husband and her were caretakers on a property, and he passed away and she had nowhere to go.

Subscriber only A lifetime of skills should not go to waste in retirement, in fact, this year s Bowen Senior Citizen of the Year Chris Coventry believes that s a perfect time to use them. Mrs Coventry has been recognised for her immense contribution to the community since she retired to Bowen in 2006. But she s quick to say she never works alone. It s very special but it s really important to recognise it s never just yourself, it s always a group of people who work together, Mrs Coventry said. I feel like I ve won it for all of us. Mrs Coventry has been part of the Murroona Gardens board for eight years, has spent four years on the Proserpine Nursing Home board and is an active volunteer with the Zonta Club of Bowen and Bowen Community Council.

Subscriber only From awards presentations to sailing and citizenship ceremonies, Australia Day celebrations took a range of different forms around the Whitsundays. The sailing season was officially opened on Australia Day with a blessing of the fleet and a sail past at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Residents also enjoyed an Australia Day Family Fun Day at the club, with more than 40 families taking to the water to try their hand at sailing.
While operating successful business Marto s Mangoes alongside his family, Mr Martin also spent a decade working with the council and has volunteered his time to serve on numerous committees. He joined the Murroona Gardens board in the late 1990s and has been chairman of the board for the past eight years. He also served eight years on the NQ Dry Tropics board and remains a member of the community reference group for Bowen Hospital. They re very worthy causes, every one of those are working for the community, Mr Martin said. We ve got a great town and great lifestyle here and it can only get better if we do our bit.
