In Kenya, the pandemic has shown that church leaders are out of control

Nearly a year after the pandemic first hit Kenya, the country has reported 113,236 infections and 1,913 coronavirus-related deaths. The actual numbers are likely to be higher. It is leading the other East African Community states, such as Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi. It s a good time to reflect on how the country dealt with the pandemic since the first case was reported on March 13, 2020. Crucial to this has been the relationship between the state and the church, with religious leaders refusing to obey government regulations and putting the people at risk.
Over the past year, COVID-19 claimed the lives of at least 6,883 Mississippians, including 1,236 Northeast Mississippi residents. Every one of those individuals had a job, a family, a purpose. Each had a story.
The Daily Journal COVID-19 Memorial Project was created to share the stories of those in our region who have died from coronavirus. Readers from across the Daily Journalâs 16-county coverage area submitted photographs and memories of their loved ones to be published as part of this project. These 20 individuals represent a tiny fraction of those weâve lost to COVID-19 in Northeast Mississippi.
We proudly share their stories with the communities they called home.

My Story: I Had Lost Hope Of Having Children Then I Got Three Miracle Babies
Sylvia Asubwa shares her long and painful journey to motherhood after she had lost all hope of conceiving.
My name is Sylvia Asubwa. I am in my mid-30s. I am a mother of three children: Favour, Reuel, and Tendai. I consider these children miracles from God because shortly before I got married in 2013, I had lost hope that I would ever have children of my own.
My story begins in February 2010, when I met my husband Jackson Nyamai at a Valentine’s dinner that the Deliverance Church Lang’ata Youth Summit had organised. I was a new member at the church and it happened that during the dinner event, I was placed at the same table with Jackson.
