Ergots form from the fungus Claviceps purpurea and occur in summer when the scierotia develop on the seedheads of many grasses and cereals. Farmers in this country have long appreciated that ergot-infested grass and hay can cause lameness and general ill-health if ingested in large quantities by stock. This is because ergot is full of alkaloids.
You could never imagine it being allowed to happen today. Rural schoolkids sent out to roam their roadsides to pick seed heads with known hallucinogenic properties. But it was one way many rural New Zealand schools responded to the war effort during World War II, sending out their pupils to collect ergot, a tiny seed head-borne fungus well known not only for its mind-altering properties, but its remarkable ability to stop bleeding.
