Page McConnell, Maybe We re the Visitors

(Keyed Records, vinyl, digital) From an obsidian void of silence, blips of light come to life. A sort of acid-trip take on tubular bells drifts out of the dark like an alarm clock going off in a dream, followed soon by the soft wash of synthesizers. I release a breath I didn t realize I was holding as Radio Silence, the first track on Page McConnell s new record, drifts by with all the austere loneliness of the last glacier slipping into the sea. A haunting exploration of solitude, Maybe We re the Visitors is something of a sonic departure for McConnell, who is best known as one-fourth of Vermont s most famous band, Phish. With the jam-band titans, McConnell s dexterous piano, organ and clavinet work is a key element in the group s sound. He abandons all of that on his latest LP, instead opting to craft a record completely with synthesizer. It s a tool McConnell had largely avoided in his career before now.

Page McConnell Announces New Album Maybe We re The Visitors & Shares Single

Maybe We’re The Visitors, a new solo album, digitally via Keyed Records this Friday, April 9. McConnell previewed the album, made exclusively with synthesizers, by sharing its lead single, “Radio Silence.” Maybe We’re The Visitors was penned and recorded during sessions held in Reykjavik, Iceland and Burlington, Vermont. Page tapped journalist David Fricke to write notes for the album. Advertisement Read excerpts from Fricke’s notes below: In January 2020, shortly before the coronavirus shut down modern life, including travel, McConnell took a road trip that had nothing to do with his normal touring itinerary as the keyboard player in Phish: a holiday in Iceland. Inevitably, music got made there. But it was unlike anything McConnell had recorded before as a solo artist, for side projects or within the collaborative energies of Phish: fully electronic pieces created on location, in response to the epic landscapes, dramatic weather, and geologic fury that he experienced
