The House Committee on Justice treated the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen as a mere scrap of paper as it voted unanimously to junk it following a determination that the complaint is insufficient in form.
With all 37 committee members voting in the affirmative, the motion to dismiss the case filed by journalist Edwin Cordevilla was upheld. Deputy Speaker and Cagayan de Oro City 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez raised the motion as he cited numerous reasons why the complaint should be rejected.
Many of those who attended the first and last hearing of the impeachment case were officials of the Lower House who are clothed with authority to vote as ex-officio members of the House panel chaired by Leyte 3rd District Rep. Vicente Veloso.

The former chairman of the House Committee on Justice that handled the 2007 impeachment case against then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will head the legal team representing the complainant in the impeachment bid against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen.
Lawyer Larry Gadon, who represented complainant Edwin Cordevilla when he filed the case last year, disclosed that former Quezon City 3rd District Rep. Mat Defensor will take over as the head of a team of lawyers, representing Cordevilla.
Defensor is expected to appear Thursday, May 27 at the initial hearing of the Committee on Justice on the case.
The justice panel chaired by Leyte Rep.Vicente Veloso will deliberate on the determination of the sufficiency in form of the complaint before proceeding to resolve sufficiency in substance which will be scheduled in succeeding hearings.

Lawyer Larry Gadon revealed on Thursday, May 6, that he has received evidence that would support the bid to remove Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen for committing the same offense that former Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes has been accused of.
This developed as Gadon called on the House Committee on Justice to immediately set the hearing of the impeachment complaint against Leonen as soon as it is referred to the panel.
Gadon said that although they have gathered evidence that may warrant the filing of a quo warranto case against Leonen, his client, journalist Edwin Cordevilla, will continue to pursue the magistrate’s removal via impeachment.
