Russell handed three-place penalty for Sainz collision
Silverstone, UK
British Grand Prix – George Russell will be starting his home Grand Prix from outside the top 10 after being handed a post-Sprint Qualifying grid drop.
During Friday’s qualifying session Russell put in some great laps for Williams to see him through to Q3 and then secure P8 for the Sprint Qualifying session, ahead of both Carlos Sainz’ Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin.
While the British driver did manage to hold onto a top ten position when he took the chequered flag in P9 after the seventeen lap inaugural Sprint event this afternoon, the Williams driver did have an investigation hanging over his head.

British Grand Prix – it might have been a twenty-five minute Sprint race for the fans but for Fernando Alonso defending made it feel much longer.
After just missing out on Q3 and the top ten shootout yesterday, Alonso looked on the bright side, saying: “It was unfortunate to be out before Q3, but it’s a new format this weekend. We have another opportunity tomorrow to gain places on the grid until we race on Sunday. Let’s see what we can learn and improve ready for tomorrow.”
Come Saturday afternoon’s Sprint Qualifying session, the two-time World Champion seized that opportunity with both hands on the opening lap, sailing past his opponents with ease and moving himself up from P11 to P5 on the opening lap.

British Grand Prix – Despite his brake fire on the grid, Max Verstappen made the better start and was able to snatch the lead from Hamilton.
It made for a dramatic image which led to a dramatic first lap in the inaugural Sprint Qualifying event, Verstappen’s Red Bull smoking and flaming as he waited for the grid to form and the lights to go out. The Dutch driver admitted to be very anxious as he watched the flames but everything worked out and that the fans would’ve gotten some great pictures as a result.
“I was really worried,” Verstappen said afterwards. “A little bit of fire, it’s not…it’s okay but at one point it was becoming quite big and I was just looking in my mirror to the guys in the back, saying please, speed up, speed up.
