Cyclone wreaks havoc on crops; mango, banana plantations worst hit Ahmedabad : Cyclone Tauktae, which claimed the lives of 45 persons in Gujarat, has also caused a huge damage to standing summer crops, with the Kesar variety of mango that is mainly grown in the coastal districts of Gir Somnath and Junagadh, bearing its brunt along with the coconut and banana plantations in parts of the state, farmers said. Coconut plantations in Junagadh, Gir Somnath, parts of Amreli and Bhavnagar, and banana plantations in Bharuch, Tapi, Vadodara, Anand and parts of Kheda, among other districts, were badly hit, in addition to other standing summer crops, they said.

Vaishali Gujjar Rjakot: A 28-year-old woman from Palitana in Bhavnagar district has confessed to having cheated three men after marrying them and running away with their money. Vaishali Gujjar, who currently lives in Ahmedabad, was remanded to one-day police custody by a court in Visavadar, Junagadh in connection with a six-month-old cheating case. Her two accomplice Gunvant Joshi and Bharat Mehta are already behind bars in the same case. Police said that Vaishali was arrested by Visavadar police on Monday in connection with a case lodged by Ashok Taraiya, a resident of Visavadar town. He had alleged that Vaishali had fled with Rs 45,000 within a few days of their marriage.

GANDHINAGAR: The states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan owed Gujarat a sum of Rs 6,934.19 crore as part of the Narmada project, The state government informed in the ongoing budget session of the Gujarat assembly on Thursday. Visavadar MLA Harshad Ribadiya asked a question, seeking details of amount that three states owed Gujarat as part of the Narmada project, as on December 31, 2020. In a written reply, the deputy chief minister said the Madhya Pradesh government owed Rs 4,764.35 crore, Maharashtra government owed Rs 1,627.66 crore, and Rajasthan owed Rs 542.18 crore.

Pride of lions preys on 10 cows at gaushala in Rajkot village

(Gujarat Forest Department) A pride of 10 lions entered a gaushala and preyed on 10 cows in Arab Timbadi village of Jetpur taluka of Rajkot district early on Tuesday. A team of forest department that was tracking the pride, however, reached the spot and saved 25 other cattle heads in the gaushala. This is the third instance of lions being spotted in Rajkot district in a month. Seven lions were found camping in Thanagalol village of Jetpur taluka, 10 km north of Arab Timbadi last month, and three lions killed 14 cattle earlier this month in Jasdan taluka. Arab Timbadi is some 10 km from the border of the Gir Wild Life Sanctuary (GWLS). Spread across Junagadh, Bhesan and Visavadar talukas of Junagadh district, GWLS is home to a few dozen Asiatic lions. However, over the past few years, lions have been dispersing out of the protected forest areas to densely populated revenue areas.
