Critic's picks: Eric Harper, Music by the Sea, and comedy

Tickets: $12 from tickets.porttheatre.com or 250-754-8550 Why: Like other musicians, Victoria’s Eric Harper has been forced to pivot during the pandemic. His sold-out concert scheduled for Nov. 27 at the Port Theatre was cancelled due to COVID-19, and has been replaced by a livestreaming one set for the same venue on Friday night. The re-shuffling apparently hasn’t affected the momentum of the Arkansas-born singer, a classically trained flamenco guitarist who won a Primetime Emmy Award three weeks ago for his musical contributions to Create Together, a YouTube series produced by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He also recently contributed to the soundtrack for the blockbuster Detective Chinatown 3, which set a world record with the largest opening weekend ($397 million US) ever in a single market (China). Harper will certainly bring energy to his show on Friday, which features a surprise special guest.

Critical care can make a life-or-death difference

“You never know when you or someone you love will need something you can help make possible,” the local business owner said of being a donor. Davis, 58, runs a tour business called That Girl in Victoria, and like many this year her prospects have been greatly affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On top that, she had to deal with cancer. The cancer first showed itself as an irritation under her tongue. Davis said it was “a big, scary moment” when the diagnosis came, followed by surgery. A biopsy in the spring showed there was more cancer to remove. Davis said an overnight stay in the hospital was suggested for her second surgery in July, since the tongue can bleed a lot.
