Hundreds of people have defied social distancing rules to march for refugee rights in Melbourne and are calling for the release of 60 detainees from a hotel in the city centre.
The detainees were moved from a detention centre on Manus Island where they had been for up to seven years before being moved to city hotels for medical treatment.
Protestors are planning to gather outside Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews' office next week and demand his support.
Allowing Invasion Day memorial but blocking Australia Day a reconciliation setback 08/01/2021|11min
NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham says Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ cancellation of Australia Day festivities, but allowance of Invasion Day memorials is “rewriting history”.
“This is actually a major setback to reconciliation because these lefties are in the process of rewriting history,” he told Sky News host Chris Smith.
Mr Latham also said the efforts of the early governors had “reached out mightily” to the Aborigines “by the standards of their time”.
“It’s a major setback to create this rewriting and division.”
