Group of Eight CEO Vicki Thomson says there is a wide range of industries looking for a “genuine discussion” about what is required to open the international borders in a “safe and secure way”.
“There is a growing chorus of concern from a wide range of groups,” he said.
“I think the call today, the Group of Eight joining with the farmers’ federation and the tourism industry just goes to the point about how interdependent … we all are on international trade and in our case on international education and research.
“We understand that the borders are closed for the appropriate reasons and until the health advice says that we should open them that’s fine.
“But what we’re looking for is some clarity and a genuine discussion around what steps we actually need to have in place to have those borders open in a safe and secure way”.

Group of Eight CEO Vicki Thompson says National Cabinet needs to provide the thresholds which need to be met before international students can return to Australia.
Ms Thompson told Sky News while South Australia and a number of other states have developed plans to bring back international students, the Northern Territory has so far been the only place to bring some back into the country.
“What we’re really looking for out of the federal government and National Cabinet process is what are the thresholds that you need to have required and met before we can have a safe rebuilding of our borders," she said.
Ms Thompson said the federal government needs to make clear how many Australians it wants to be vaccinated and exactly what the quarantine requirements for international students will be before it considers reopening.
