Resorts and theme parks face worker shortage as they open for summer

Resorts and theme parks face worker shortage as they open for summer By Megan Cerullo Jersey Shore businesses struggling to hire Resort communities across the U.S. face an acute shortage of summer workers as concerns about transmitting COVID-19 linger and many Americans continue to receive expanded unemployment benefits.  Oceanside restaurants, amusement parks and other operations say there are too few job applicants for temporary positions that remain open. For example, Morey s Piers and Beachfront Water Parks, a 70-year-old amusement park in Wildwood, New Jersey, is still looking to fill 1,500 jobs. The park s rides open Saturday. We have 1,500 jobs and positions like ride operator, lifeguard, food and beverage, games, parking, human resources vice president Denise Beckson told CBS correspondent Matt Petrillo.

Summer Worker Shortage Could Put Damper on Summer Down the Jersey Shore

Along with many other tourism-dependent Jersey Shore businesses, Morey s relies on foreign students to help fill the labor force because of a traditional lack of American applicants. Those workers come to the U.S. on special visas, but there are significant concerns about if they ll be able to make it into the country due to a combination of factors. First, there are COVID-related visa processing delays. Secondly, there are additional temporary non-immigrant visa restrictions issued by former President Trump that expired at the end of March Vicki Clark, the Chamber of Commerce president for Cape May County, said that they are working very hard to have the Biden administration fast-track applications for non-immigrant visas.
