Three officers involved in the killing of Manuel Ellis during his arrest will face charges, the Washington State Attorney General s office announced on Thursday.
The office said it charged Tacoma Police officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins with second-degree murder and officer Timothy Rankine with first-degree manslaughter. The charges were filed by Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D) in Pierce County Superior Court.
The office said the second-degree murder charge for persons with no prior criminal history can carry a standard prison sentence ranging from 10-18 years. The standard sentencing range for the first-degree manslaughter charge with no previous criminal history is 6.5-8.5 years.

Officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins were both charged with second-degree murder and Officer Timothy Rankine with first-degree manslaughter, the Washington State Attorney General announced in a press release.
Warrants have been issued for their arrests. The Tacoma Police Department did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment.
Ellis, 33, died on March 3, 2020, after police stopped him while he was walking home. Authorities said at the time that he was allegedly harassing a woman at an intersection.

TACOMA, Wash. The Washington State Attorney General s (AG) office is expected to announce whether any Tacoma police officers will face charges related to the death of Manuel Ellis on Thursday.
As Washington awaits the AG s decision, residents in Tacoma say the waiting is sending a message all on its own.
“We’re talking over a year later,” said Katrina Johnson of Families on the Frontline. “Justice would’ve been those officers already being in jail, awaiting what comes next. Justice would’ve been Mannie still being alive, justice would be charges being filed a long time ago and not waiting on pins and needles.”
