Washington officials propose toolkit to help people with mental health, addiction issues find housing

Washington officials propose toolkit to help people with mental health, addiction issues find housing By Sydney Brownstone, The Seattle Times Published: April 29, 2021, 12:30pm Share: Almost 10 years ago, state researchers conducted a study looking at how many people in Washington state became homeless after leaving inpatient treatment for a mental health issue or substance use disorder. The results were shocking. Nearly half the people discharged from a drug or alcohol treatment facility in 2010 were homeless or didn’t have stable housing within a year. For the people discharged from state psychiatric hospitals, it was 30%. In the midst of an ever-growing homelessness crisis a decade later, there’s little to suggest that those gaps have much improved. But now, state officials are embarking on a project to better connect people leaving treatment with the limited housing options that await them outside.

A common complaint among community pharmacists is that they are sapped physically, mentally and financially by hours of paperwork, piles of rejected claims and unceasing billing audits just to receive some level of payment for administering vaccines. And it’s a problem that could push some of these small businesses to the brink financially. Every week, Chris Antypas said he and his staff at Asti s South Hills Pharmacy in Pittsburgh are making the same calculation as many other mom and pop pharmacists: Though they have inoculated thousands quickly and effectively, can the business afford to continue?
