‘Virtual’ charity game raises $36,000 for children’s cancer
Faced with a pandemic and health protocols limiting or prohibiting indoor gatherings, the 27th annual C-U Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge, organized and presented by Town & Country Federal Credit Union, was at risk of being canceled for the first time in its history. However, based on feedback from past participants and strong support from sponsors and volunteers, it was clear that the ‘shot’ must go on. Instead of a one-day, 3-on-3, co-ed tournament for adults and youth teams, this year’s event transitioned into a ‘virtual’ 3-on-3, free-throw competition.
The competition, which ran from April 12 to May 8 raised $36,000 to support the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Seafood farms popping up all along the coast have Maine’s aquaculture industry primed for a boom and two organizations in the state are preparing to meet its workforce needs with a first-of-its-kind training program.
The Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center and Washington County Community College received a $500,000 grant to be paid out over three years from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to develop an aquaculture-specific training program at the college.
The program will aim to meet the growing need for tech-savvy, skilled workers in four of the largest aquaculture subsets: land-based recirculating aquaculture, marine fin-fish aquaculture, cold-water coastal shellfish aquaculture and marine macroalgae aquaculture. Students will graduate with either a workforce training certificate or an associate’s degree.

Maine colleges and universities will receive $105.7 million in emergency funding under the federal government s American Rescue Plan, with half of the money going directly to students facing hunger, homelessness and other hardship.
The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan stimulus bill, signed into law by President Joe Biden in March, includes more than $36 billion in emergency grants for post-secondary education.
Nationwide, the grants will help more than 5,000 institutions of higher education provide emergency financial aid to millions of student and ensure that learning continues during the pandemic. Emergency funds provided plan will more than double relief aid available to students already authorized under other federal legislation, including the CARES Act.
WASHINGTON, D.C. An influx of $105,688,374 in emergency funding for colleges, universities, and students in Maine is on its way to Maine under the American Rescue Plan.
The funding will help local institutions cope with the severe financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and continue serving their students safely, according to a news release.
At least half of the funding each institution receives will be distributed in the form of emergency cash assistance grants to students who are facing hunger, homelessness, and other hardship. Students should contact their institutions for more information about how they can apply for an emergency grant.
