COVID-19 provides an ominous backdrop for this year’s legislative session, which features important developments on issues ranging from marijuana to mandatory minimum sentences, from schools to statues.

COVID-19 respiratory center available to WSU students

Cougar Health Services opened a new respiratory facility to treat WSU students who have more severe COVID-19 symptoms. For students to receive care at the facility, they need to be evaluated via telecommunication first, said CHS executive director Joel Schwartzkopf. A nurse will determine if the student should be treated at the Washington Building or Bustad Hall. CHS operates the respiratory center, he said. The Washington Building has been a good place to treat students because it was originally the hospital for Pullman, Schwartzkopf said. “My office is in the old pharmacy,” he said. “Everyone has their own door and a giant bathroom [and] because it is a hospital, it’s really good at providing space.”

WSU Opens Respiratory Care Center For Students

Washington State University has set up a Respiratory Care Center for students experiencing coronavirus symptoms. Cougar Health Services is operating the center in Bustad Hall.  CHS needed to find a specially designed space to examine potential coronavirus patients.  The department created 2 negative pressure rooms in the Washington Building but they needed a larger space to properly care for students with coronavirus symptoms. The new center will test students for coronavirus.  Students must first be pre-screened with CHS before being referred to the center.  Staff will not accept drop-ins at Bustad Hall. Once the new Respiratory Care Center is fully operational WSU Cougar Health Services will no longer need the respiratory care tents that were erected in the parking lot of the Washington Building.  Those tents were set up after an outbreak of coronavirus occurred among students when they returned to Pullman to study online in the Fall.

Cougar Health Services to open Respiratory Care Center in Bustad Hall | WSU Insider

February 1, 2021 By Steve Nakata, Division of Student Affairs Washington State University students experiencing respiratory symptoms are being examined and treated in a new Respiratory Care Center operated by Cougar Health Services in Bustad Hall. The center stems from the University’s need for specially designed spaces to examine people with potential COVID-19 symptoms. Because of the risk of airborne transmission of COVID, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that providers see people with respiratory symptoms in rooms with enhanced ventilatory capabilities. CHS Executive Director Joel Schwartzkopf said the Washington Building, where CHS is located, was not designed for something as complex as COVID-19.
