I remember former Mayor Bob Forrest telling how every morning he would leave his home and travel along the Pecos River and what an inspiration this was to him and what a great asset the river is to the City of Carlsbad.
We are all also amazed by the beautiful Pecos River and what a great resource it is for Carlsbad, one of the few communities in New Mexico where a river runs directly through the city.
Another unbelievable asset Carlsbad has is the Ocotillo or Fountain Foothills on the west side of Carlsbad, which eventually lead into the Guadalupe Mountains. There also aren’t many communities in New Mexico with beautiful hills overlooking most of the city as well as a river.

Living Desert closed to the public due to stay-at-home orders
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert will be closed to the public in accordance with Governor Gavin Newsom s stay-at-home orders.
Zoos are among the numerous sectors that are closed due to the new regional stay-at-home order, which went into effect on Sunday, December 6 at 11:59 p.m.
The Living Desert s closure began on Monday, December 7 and will remain in place for at least three weeks or until the mandate is lifted. While we are sad to be closing our doors again, we know that it is for the greater health of our staff, guests, and community, said Allen Monroe, President/CEO. As always, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the highest level of care to the 500 animals who call The Living Desert home. Our excellent animal care and veterinary team will continue to remain onsite during our temporary closure.
We’re halfway between Christmas and Thanksgiving, and it is a good time to take a little break and focus on what makes this community so special. This is not in any way meant to be dismissive of the many challenges so many of us are facing right now, but we are so fortunate that Carlsbad is positioned to move forward. Here are a few of our advantages:
Economic Diversity: The best oil play in the world lies beneath Carlsbad, and this area has the biggest potash reserves in the country. Carlsbad is proudly the home to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and with it two national laboratories, Sandia and Los Alamos. We’ve taken a hit throughout 2020 just like everyone, but our unemployment numbers are still lower than most places due to our healthy diversity, which also includes tourism, agriculture and manufacturing. We have a productive relationship with our neighbors, including Eddy County, Artesia, Loving and Lea and Chaves Counties.

The Spring River Zoo will start charging admission fees on Jan. 1 after the Roswell City Council approved the proposal by a split vote Thursday night.
The resolution had only a slight change from the original proposal, changing wording to include “school-age groups” in its rates rather than “school groups.” The amended resolution passed 6-3 after more than a half hour of discussion.
Voting in favor of the zoo fees were Councilors Judy Stubbs, Barry Foster, Jeanine Best, Margaret Kennard, Jason Perry and Savino Sanchez. Councilors Juan Oropesa, George Peterson and Angela Moore voted against it. Councilor Jacob Roebuck was absent from the meeting.
