Ryan Alford, the APGA Tour newcomer from Shreveport, Louisiana, shot a four-under-par 68 to seize the first-round lead at APGA Tour Louisville in pursuit of his second consecutive victory on the circuit that has become a force in driving greater diversity in the sport of golf.
The former Louisiana Tech golfer, 24, won APGA Tour Scottsdale on April 20, playing only his fourth APGA Tour event. He scored an eagle on the 18th hole to widen his lead over APGA Tour star Willie Mack and PGA Member Jabir Bilal of Atlanta, who played golf at Grambling State University. Mack, who has played two PGA Tour events this year as a sponsor exemption, and Bilal are both three strokes back at one-under. Alford is a high school teammate and regular practice partner of PGA TOUR standout Sam Burns.

The focus has fallen on Rory McIlroy, winner of the men’s Professional Golfers Association Championship the last time it was held at South Carolina’s Kiawah Island Golf Resort in 2012, to repeat his victory upon its return.
But ahead of tomorrow’s opening day there appear to be a number of strong contenders apart from the 32-year-old from Northern Ireland who won by eight strokes nine years ago, and who added a second PGA title at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky - his fourth, and so far last victory in a Major.
While McIlroy, who won his last tournament at Quail Hollow two weeks ago, is among the favourites, others include home player Jordan Spieth, who has won all three other Major tournaments and is thus after a career Grand Slam, having finished second in the PGA in 2015.

While competition is a big part of the PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup, this annual start to PGA Championship Week is much bigger than bragging rights and trophies. Still, local knowledge paid dividends at the 2021 event, a 9-hole golf competition for military Veterans who have participated in the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program.
On spectacular Kiawah Island, camaraderie, countless fist bumps and big smiles lit up Osprey Point Golf Course, as 24 Veterans, alongside their PGA Member coaches, embraced the opportunity to play during a special day for golf.
