It s back? Yes and no. Sadly, there isn t a new series to enjoy, but for fans of the hit Nordic noir crime drama who fancy a saunter down memory lane all three series of The Killing are due to land on BBC iPlayer. Anyone expecting to suffer withdrawal symptoms as hit BBC show Line of Duty reaches its finale, might find that a re-watching of the Danish police procedural, which first aired in the UK in 2011, could take the edge off things. Remind us of the premise? Sarah Lund, played by Sofie Grabol, is a stone-faced, obsessive detective tasked with solving brutal crimes. Each series follows a murder investigation day-by-day, packed with dark storylines and gripping plot twists.

White House Farm and the much heralded Behind Her Eyes (great acting from the two female protagonists but, really, what a load of baloney). Anyway, not a lot of laughs anywhere in that line-up. And while that’s my choice, it’s also because when it comes to television comedy, there’s not much out there to attract me these days. Now I don’t mean super-smart, clever-clogs comedy, where every politically correct box is ticked and then ticked again. Nor do I mean the kind of satire that needs to be analysed and parsed and discussed with much stroking of beards and furrowing of brows.

Guilty conscience

Icelandic drama Systrabönd (Sisterhood) sees three women face up to a decades-old crime in a story about how people respond differently to guilt. Writer Jóhann Ævar Grímsson tells DQ about his aim to offer a fresh take on a familiar genre. As the lead writer of Icelandic neo-noir drama Stella Blomkvist, Jóhann Ævar Grímsson sought to upend Nordic noir with a super-stylised series featuring a lead character who is at once a detective, an unreliable narrator and a femme fatale. Filming on the second season of Stella Blomkvist is now in its final weeks, with Grímsson once again working on the scripts and pushing the lead character to the extremes of the genre.
