Pressure grows on universities to address Zoom academic freedom concerns
Late last year, Georgetown University’s Main Campus Executive Faculty, “a legislative body made up of representatives from the schools of the Main Campus,” overwhelmingly passed a motion calling on the university to “[d]evelop and publicize alternatives to Zoom so that it no longer enjoys a monopoly as on-line classroom platform and meeting platform at Georgetown.”
The motion also called for an advisory committee to determine if “Georgetown University’s contract with Zoom indeed allows Zoom to censor academic content” and, if it does, offer recommendations “to preserve academic freedom.”

AFP US declares China committed genocide against Uyghurs and Vietnam s Communist Party Congress
The U.S. designation of China’s repression of ethnic Uyghurs in its northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) as genocide must be followed with stronger economic sanctions and a concerted international effort to push Beijing to reverse course, according to a group of experts.
Chinese policies in the XUAR aim for “the forced assimilation and eventual erasure of a vulnerable ethnic and religious minority group,” outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said as he announced a designation that Uyghur exile groups have advocated since the revelation in 2017 of mass internment camps that have held as many as 1.8 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities.

A top customs official said Thursday that Washington is not seeking a total ban on cotton products from northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) but sounding a warning to American firms to review their supply chains amid concerns of forced labor.
On Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a Withhold Release Order (WRO) to detain all cotton products and tomatoes from the XUAR at the country’s ports of entry, saying that the agency had identified indicators of forced labor including debt bondage, restriction of movement, isolation, intimidation and threats, withholding of wages, and abusive living and working conditions.
