Measure would require two-third vote to amend the constitution

Ana Maria Rodriguez The Senate Ethics and Elections Committee has approved a proposed ballot measure that would further increase Florida’s supermajority requirement for amending the Constitution. The committee voted 5-3 on March 9 to approve SB 1238 by Rep. Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Doral. Rodriguez said the measure is necessary, among other things, to make it harder for corporate interests to circumvent the Legislature by backing multimillion-dollar initiative campaigns. “The Constitution of the state is a sacred document, it should not be something that could be altered in an easy fashion,” Rodriguez said. “They tend to come in with large sums of money to influence an election to have the outcome go in their favor.”

Florida anti-riot bill moves closer to passage in House

The House Justice Appropriations Subcommittee OK d the contentious anti-riot legislation (HB 1) on a 10-5 party-line vote; progressives and other activists have labeled it  unconstitutional and even racist. Almost 70 speakers from groups around the state spoke against the bill, including some who urged the panel to kill this bill before it kills us. Two speakers were removed from the meeting by House sergeants-at-arms after violating rules of decorum, one for using profanity and another for not ending her remarks after the allotted one minute.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff s Office (HCSO) shared the video of Kathleen Quinn from Jan. 27 in honor of Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. A seven-year-old was crossing the intersection in Valrico, Florida, when a car swept through. Even though Quinn was in the middle of the road, with her stop sign raised above her head, the driver did not slow down.
