Waldo Theatre auditions: ‘Almost, Maine’ March 17, 18 Mon, 03/08/2021 - 4:30pm (Photo courtesy Waldo Theatre) WALDOBORO The Waldo is raising the curtain on live theatre production, making sure it’s a safe, fun, and rewarding experience for all, with a call for actors to audition March 17 or 18 for a summer production of Almost, Maine. Auditions and April rehearsals will be held on Zoom. This production will be the first in the newly renovated Waldo Theatre space. Set for June 17 - 19 and June 24 - 26, several live performances with limited audiences are planned as well as live-streamed and/or on-demand recorded performances via The Waldo’s new streaming system. The safety of the cast, crew, and audiences will be foremost in determining performance conditions.

(Photo courtesy Gawler Sisters) WALDOBORO The Waldo Theatre presents the next in its series of virtual concert performances: the Gawlers, a fun-loving, folk-singing, fiddle-playing family from Maine, broadcast live in real-time from The Waldo stage Thursday, March 11, at 7 p.m. The show features Ellen Gawler and her three daughters Molly, Edith, and Elsie. “The Gawler Sisters and their mom bring a unique sound full of heart, toe-tapping fiddle and banjo tunes, songs traditional and original, full of joy,” said The Waldo, in a news release. Recent virtual concerts from The Waldo have attracted audiences from close to 200 households and reached fans in over 20 states, according to the theater. Since the theater is not yet open to the public, there will be no audience in the theatre. The performance will be captured in real-time by a technical “stream team” with the use of a new three-camera video system.

Anna Finocchiaro photo The Waldo Theatre, which has been closed since 2014 and under renovations and with new board leadership for the past three years, needed to raise $200,000 to complete its $700,000 “Open the Doors” capital campaign and reopen its doors. In February of 2020, an anonymous donor came forward and offered a challenging proposition: if The Waldo could raise $157,000 from community support, the donor would contribute the remaining $43,000. As of the Dec. 31 grant challenge deadline, The Waldo had not only met the required amount, but had in fact exceeded the goal, raising over $182,000 with which to complete renovations.

The show features violinists Sophie and Josie Davis and Colin Wheatley on viola in collaboration with cellist Nora Willauer and violinist and videographer Luke Fator. The winter celebration show is one of lovely chamber music with an accompanying film that shows the beauty, quiet, subtlety and darkness of winter, and the program includes Vivaldi’s spellbinding “Winter” from “The Four Seasons,” along with Richter’s “The Nature of Daylight” and pieces by Shubert, Debussy, Price and others. Ticket holders will be able to view the show for a week.
