Observer-Dispatch The three dozen Utica police officers who called out or abandoned their shifts in protest last year of the suspension of a city police sergeant will forfeit pay as a result of what was determined to be an illegal strike, a joint statement from the city and the Utica Police Benevolent Association said Friday. Utica police announced Sgt. Samuel Geddes was suspended without pay after reviewing footage of him making inappropriate comments to a woman and a teenager before discharging pepper spray at them on Aug. 23. Geddes remains on paid administrative leave after his suspension ended in October. The Sept. 25 announcement, as well as the release of video footage of the incident, was followed that day by some police department members abandoning their shifts or calling in sick for future shifts, city officials said.
