Here comes the alphabetti spaghetti again. There’s a BBA in E14 send for the ladies of the RCM, PDQ.
Call The Midwife (BBC1) went all Line Of Duty, with a scattergun of initials, as Nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott) broke off from training students from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and raced away by express bicycle to a Born Before Arrival (BBA) in Poplar (postcode E14).
With tensions mounting, there was a real danger Lucille might barge into the office of head nun Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and address her as ‘Guv’. Mother of God!
Luckily, a BBA is just an impatient baby that doesn’t hang around waiting to be delivered by a woman in a plum uniform. It’s got nothing to do with an OCG (organised crime gang), which in the East End of the 1960s meant the Kray Twins and their associates.

Covering more than 50 acres, there are long rides lined with clipped beech hedges leading to temples, statues, a lake and a terraced theatre. There are seasonal displays of daffodils, magnolias and rhododendrons and plenty of wildflowers. Tickets £7.50 (booking required), children free. Alswick Hall in Buntingford is also planning an NGS open day on April 11.

With the country opening up again like a spring bloom, we can set our sights once more on exploring the county, including visiting some of Hertfordshire’s wonderful gardens.
It was nearly a century ago that the future king George VI drove his sports car to St Paul’s Walden Bury to try for the third time to gain the hand in marriage of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Here at her family’s country estate near Hitchin, Bertie finally persuaded the future Queen Mother to marry him. On the afternoon of Sunday, April 11 you can walk in their footsteps as the estate, still in the ownership of the Bowes-Lyons, opens its doors for the charitable National Garden Scheme.
