Lifeguards responded by performing CPR on the man, who is understood to have been training with North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club. Additional Lifeguards were moved from nearby beaches to provide additional support, and to monitor swimmers in the water, while the man was being treated. NSW Ambulance responded to a reported drowning at the beach just after 8.45am. Four four crews and a specialist medical team had been dispatched to the scene. The man, aged 48, collapsed after he was assisted from the water by lifeguards. Bystanders and paramedics performed CPR on the man before he was taken in a critical condition to Wollongong Hospital, where he later died.
