On Wednesday, May 19, Toomey & Co. Auctioneers will present its second
Modern Design + Post-War & Contemporary Art sale of 2021, with an impressive selection of art and design by individuals who have shaped their respective fields during the mid-to-late 20th century. The auction features a variety of sculptures, paintings, works on paper, ceramics, glass, furniture, lighting, metalwork, and more. Among the examples available are works by European and American innovators as well as those who made their mark in Chicago specifically. CHICAGO, IL
.- On May 20, Hindman Auctions will present its biannual Modern Design sale, which will feature iconic designers who played a crucial role in defining 20th century design. The auction will celebrate the work of renowned designers including Finn Juhl, Eileen Gray, Martin Szekely, Mira Nakashima, Warren Platner, and Paul Evans.
Scandinavian Design will be showcased with classic and illustrious ceramics and furniture by Wilhelm Kåge, Berndt Friberg, Gunnar Nylund, Bruno Mathsson, and Arne Jacobsen. Prominent Italian design will include works by Ettore Sottsass, Alfredo Barbini, and Angelo Lelii. The sale will also offer an extraordinary selection of studio ceramics and glass by artists Ruth Duckworth, Clyde Burt, Sonja Blomdahl, Steven Weinberg, and Christop

Filtered sunlight penetrates enormous, floor-to-ceiling windows at both front and rear. As a sunbeam crawls across the herringbone floor, each chevron lights up as if powered internally. As glossy white kitchen cabinets ping light in every direction, the brooding, dark marble island acts as absorbent counterpoint. No matter, artwork over the dining room table John MacGregor’s swirls of sky blue, red, orange, and ochre create a happy rhythm that seems to respond to Paul Desmond’s soft saxophone as it oozes from hidden ceiling speakers.
Just above those speakers, a secret, second-floor courtyard awaits a stronger kiss of sunlight before it can be enjoyed. Until spring arrives, however, the generous basement provides distraction via a home theatre large enough to charge admission.

Danny Tenaglia has been into and influencing dance music before the genre had really even been fully defined. Growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the 60s and 70s, Tenaglia absorbed the sounds and styles of his diverse neighborhood and cultivated a love of rummaging through records as a child into a career that is now well into its fourth decade.
Starting in the 80s, when Tenaglia was working for the
Billboard charts before signing his first record, his profile rose on first in New York and then into international circuit via the power of his transportive, eclectic, deep, performances. His extended sets (which have on occasion lasted for 24 hours) are legendary. His residency at TwiLo is legendary. Even just speaking to him through Zoom is kind of legendary, with Tenaglia warmly sharing stories of Paradise Garage and Giorgio Morode
