People often ask if they can grow avocados in central Florida. Although commercial production is all in south Florida, we can grow avocados here. In fact, there are some great cultivars that are cold hardy, but there are disease issues you should be aware of before you buy an avocado tree.
Laurel Wilt is a fungal disease spread by very small boring beetles. In an interesting symbiosis, the beetles carry the spores of the fungus on their bodies and when they start to bore into a tree, they introduce the fungus into the trunk. The fungus grows and the beetles eat the fungus, so it is like they farm the fungus. Unfortunately for us, the fungus causes the vascular system of the tree to become clogged and - within a few weeks of the infection - the tree will die because it cannot move water up into the leaves, hence the “wilt” in the name.

Economic Opportunity Corporation a $20,000 grant as part of BCBSIL’s latest round of giving aimed at helping the helpers.
“This generous award from BCBSIL COVID-19 Community Collaboration Fund could not have come at a better time” says Cindy Mayer, Director of Homeless Services. “We will be able to meet the needs of the unsheltered in our communities. Thank you BSBS of IL.”

Applications are available at any C.E.F.S. Outreach Office, High School Counselor, IETC, local colleges and our web site at www.cefseoc.org. Completed applications with all necessary documentation must be received in the County Outreach Office by 4:00p.m. April 1, 2021.
Applicants are screened for eligibility after the deadline. A committee of C.E.F.S. Board of Directors and staff will interview the eligible applicants prior to choosing the winners. Scholarship funds will be available for the FY2
